NADH is the active coenzyme or reduced form of niacin (vitamin B3) an essential nutrient that has many uses throughout the body but is traditionally associated with the production of energy. This form of niacin does not require converting by the body before it can be utilised meaning it can be used quickly and more efficently than other forms of niacin.
Niacin has a wide range of health support properties; it contributes to the normal production of energy, and may therefore help to reduce tiredness and fatigue. It is also necessary for the normal functioning of our nervous system, as well as our psychological function.
NADH stands for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) plus hydrogen (H). NADH is a coenzyme that is found in all living cells. It occurs naturally in the body and plays an active role in the complex chemical process that generates energy within the mitochondria of cells, traditionally known as the “powerhouse” of the cell. This complex process continuously takes place to produce the energy required for both our mental and physical performance. NADH may be described as an “energy shuttle”, as it is a necessary part of the electron transport chain.
